Abstract:Research suggests that the management of information systems professionals makes a difference in the quality and quantity of systems produced. Although technological developments affecting the productivity of systems professionals are relatively easy to isolate, the effects of differences in management are harder to assess. This paper reports the results of a two-stage effort to develop, validate, and score an instrument for measuring differences in management. In the first stage an instrument and scoring procedures for measuring the work-unit environment were developed and shown to have acceptable reliability and validity. In the second stage the work-unit environment instrument and scoring procedures were adapted to yield a shorter instrument for measuring differences in demonstrated skill at supervising. Based on different assumptions about the desirability of mid-range work-unit environments. alternative scoring algorithms are used with responses to the ten-item survey to yield alternate indices of demonstrated skill at supervising. Although factor and reliability analyses support the reliability and validity of the instrument, the scoring algorithms require further research. In addition, the relationship between the work-unit environment and demonstrated skill at supervising constructs and other related constructs could also be a worthwhile area for further investigation.Key Words and Phrases:: productivity of information systems professionalsskill measurementsupervision of information function Additional informationNotes on contributorsThomas W. His current research interests focus on the management of information systems professionals and managerial use of information technology. Short is Dean of the School of Business at Central Connecticut State University. Prior to joining CCSU in 1986, Dr. Short was at Drake University for ftfteen years as a Professor of Management, chair of the Management Department and Director of Graduate Programs in Business. Dr. Short also served in various human resource management positions of the federal government, including director of personnel He received his bachelor and masters degrees in business from Texas Tech University and his doctorate in business administration from the University of Colorado.Ritu AgarwalRitu Agarwal is an Associate Professor in the Department of MIS and Decision Sciences at the University of Dayton. She received her Ph.D. in MIS and her M.S. in computer science from Syracuse University in 1988. Professor Agarwal’s publications have appeared and are forthcoming in Journal of Management Information Systems, Information and Management, OMEGA, Decision Support Systems, Knowledge-Based Systems, International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, Knowledge Acquisition, and elsewhere, and she has presented papers at several national and international meetings. Her current research focuses on knowledge-based systems, decision support systems, and management of information systems professionals.
