The Elasticities of Supply and Demand for Swedish Exports in a Simultaneous Model
针对传统贸易弹性研究忽视供给侧的缺陷,采用联立模型估计瑞典出口的供需价格弹性,并与已有研究对比,为贸易政策分析提供更可靠的参数依据。
Due to methodological constraints, studies of elasticities in international trade have concentrated on the demand side of imports and exports. Demand price elasticities have normally been estimated under the assumption of infinite supply price elasticities. This may be acceptable for the supply of imports to a single country, but less so for the supply of exports. Under normal conditions it cannot be assumed that increased demand for a country's exports can be met by increased supply without an export price increase. An interesting way to deal with this problem of the demand and supply of exports was proposed by Goldstein and Khan (1978). They suggest the use of a simultaneous model to estimate the above-mentioned elasticities and present empirical results for eight countries, excluding Sweden. I have used their method, although somewhat modified, on Swedish data. In this note I present the results, discuss the use of different explanatory variables, and compare my results with those obtained in other available studies of Sweden. I also discuss different ways of estimating the model.
