Individual Effects in a System of Demand Functions
This paper deals with estimation of a complete system of Fourgeaud-Nataf-Nasse demand functions with an error components specification. Household budget data, with repeated observations of each household, allow identification of the model's unobservable individual effects. Tests of this specification indicate that both family size and the unobservable individual effects are significant-and numerically important-factors in the demand system. Estimates of income and price elasticities are included, as is an empirical assessment of Frisch's famous conjecture that the absolute value of income flexibility is a decreasing function of income.
