Abstract

It has been said that Sweden has provided three generations of outstanding contributors to economics. middle generation included three leaders of what came to be called The Stockholm School: Erik Lundberg, Bertil Ohlin, and Gunnar Myrdal.' Ohlin left economics for many years to act as a leader in Swedish politics; and Myrdal, who chose to work largely in isolation, also wandered into other arenas. Only Erik Lundberg remained an undeviating contributor to the field of economics, keeping himself accessible to colleagues in the field, and helping without interruption to shape the future of research and teaching of economics in Sweden. While all three of the writers who have been mentioned contributed profound ideas to the literature I shall suggest that it was Lundberg more than any other Swedish writer of the 1930s and the early postwar period whose work encompassed what was the heart of the very valuable vision offered by the Stockholm School. In my opinion the chief contribution of the Stockholm School is not the early discovery of what later came to be described as Keynesian analysis, for the Swedes did something very different than this, which was much more and at the same time much less than such a claim would suggest. What they contributed was most of all centered about the concept of sequence (process) analysis, in which each development is recognized to evolve from its predecessor in a manner that lends itself to illuminating and systematic analysis. It is this, I believe, rather than a formal model of unemployment equilibrium, that the Swedes brought to the literature, and no member of the Stockholm School did so more effectively than Erik Lundberg. As an innovator of ideas and a source of inspiration to younger scholars he had no superiors. Our discipline was indeed enriched by his work and by his presence.
