A market for rural land use, or the right to use land, has resurged since the early 1980s when the system of contracting land to individual households was introduced in China. The market per se is not as common as in most countries, as ownership of land is vested in rural collectives. It has been a most controversial issue in recent years, though some amendments to land policy have been made. This paper is an attempt to clarify the actual situation and major characteristics of the market. A case study is presented. Brief conclusions and proposals follow.
