ABSTRACTS This paper examines the role of pay, human capital and mismatch in the decision to quit an occupation. Particular emphasis is given to human capital accumulation where occupations provide a fixed amount of training opportunities. An occupational quits equation is estimated using micro data from the National Training Survey, 1974. Education, training, pay and lifecycle effects are found to have a significant impact on the quit decision. The determinants of intra‐firm promotion and inter‐firm occupational mobility are also examined.
