Abstract

U.S. and Japanese semiconductor and computer multinationals, compelled.to invest in new computerized technologies, tapped specific opportunities in the Scottish labor market to cope with competitive pressures in the early 1980s. Rapid industrial growth and technological demands interacted dynamically with government policy and gender attitudes to create new expectations of work and workers. Gender ascriptions associated with technology and gender relations in both the household and workplace fostered an environment for industry to reorganize work structures, enhancing many jobs, and to substitute men for women in new production jobs.
