Economic Inequality and Public Policy in a Small Open Economy

It is shown that, in a small open country, government policies restricted to changes in the existing commodity tax, tariff, or transfer structures can be used to reduce the degree of economic inequality. A sufficient condition for the existence of ineq uality-reducing policy reforms is that the preferences and initial en dowments of the privileged and the deprived differ significantly.
