The Occupational Attainment of Immigrant Women in Sweden

The major question addressed in this paper is what causes the observed difference in the occupational attainments of native and foreign women living in Sweden. Multinomial logit models of occupational attainment are estimated for each group. Then, using these models, two simulations are conducted. One simulates the occupational distribution that foreigners would have if they had the same measured traits as natives. The other simulates the distribution foreigners would have if they had the same occupational preferences as natives, their qualifications were treated as those of natives, and they were all fluent in Swedish. Differences in measured traits are found to account for very little of the difference in the occupational distributions.
