Abstract

It is now more than a decade since British troops were sent to Northern Ireland, and the conflict in the province continues with no end in sight. A great deal has been written about the economic and political background to this conflict, but relatively little about what has actually happened since 1969. Whilst a great deal of information is available from official sources and specialist publications, there have been few attempts to collate this material and provide a general picture of the situation in Northern Ireland. The present article has been written in an attempt to fill this gap.1 It is mainly concerned with the 1970s but it also briefly considers preceding history. For reasons of space and time the article is highly selective, and a number of important questions are ignored or touched upon only superficially. In particular, discussion of politics has been kept to a minimum, and the emphasis is mainly upon economic and social questions. Moreover, the article is almost entirely concerned with the situation inside Northern Ireland itself and, whilst there are occasional references to the independent republic in southern Ireland, there is no attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of Ireland as a whole.
