This article presents comparable data on part-time employment for Great Britain and West Ge rmany. It seeks to identify some main reasons for the higher incidenc e of part-time employment in Britain by comparing full- and part-time jobs, looking at the distribution by industry, the position in the f irm, occupation, the liability to National Insurance contributions, a nd the sociodemographic characteristics of part-time employees.
