These two volumes contain the proceedings of a conference held on 15–17 October 1998 on the subject of ‘Theory and Evidence in Macroeconomics' at the University of Bergamo. On each of eight topics, two papers are presented: one from a more empirical or econometric point of view and another from a more theoretical point of view. There is then a discussion of the two papers from a methodological viewpoint, and a transcript of the general discussion. The topics are (i) business cycles (ii) monetary policy (iii) the influence of recent econometric techniques (iv) growth (v) the IS‐LM model (vi) the labour market (vii) new Keynesian economics, and (viii) the use of macroeconomics in official documents.
