The qualitative field research technology known as clinical methods offers distinct advantages for research on family firms. This article describes clinical methods and shows how the technique matches the unique properties of family businesses. Some disadvantages of clinical methods are also discussed. Use of the methodology is illustrated in examples from clinical field research in a family-owned and -managed retail concern.
