Space and Economics: An Introduction to Regional Economics
这是一篇对一本区域经济学入门教材的书评,指出其内容涵盖经典主题,但导论部分对经济地理学的观点过时,未能与其他同类著作区分,且对“区域”的定义不够精细。
There are three fundamental questions concerning an introductory textbook: A glance at the table of contents of Heijman and Schipper's book reveals extremely classical topics in regional economics ranging from the microeconomic foundations (land use and location theory) to the macroeconomic questions (trade, disparities, spatial equilibrium, etc.). To be honest, I was somewhat disappointed by the preface and the introductory chapter. First, my impression was that it reveals a rather outdated view of economic geography. Second, it fails to situate the present book in regard to several others that also ‘aim at integrating space in the area of general economics in an analytical way’, although generally at a more advanced level. Third, the term region is rather crudely introduced. As advocated by many scholars, administrative regions do not necessarily match functional research. I would have expected more care and nuance in the definition of the concept. Finally, listing the European NUTS2 regions does not seem very useful or should at least be accompanied by a map.
