Abstract

Executive Overview If corporate strategies reflect how chief executive officers perceive the world around them, then executives can benefit from what a group of CEOs have to say about what they have experienced as well as what they see on the horizon. Those at the top of today's firms who navigated their enterprises through the Whitewater of the 1980s are quick to point out that the 1990s will be anything but sailing downwind on a placid lake. Chief executives anticipate that the decade of the 1990s will bring multidimensional challenges and perpetual change. Few CEOs believe it will be “business as usual.” While firms will still need to offer goods and services via the efficient use of limited resources: new players are entering the game, the rule book is being re-written each day, expectations from all sides are increasing, and the playing field is no longer just down the street…firms are now having to compete in the global arena. The marketplace will show no mercy to firms that fail to keep pace with the sea change of the 1990s. To paraphrase one CEO. “There is no assurance that a Fortune 500 firm will be around in the year 2000.” The past may not be prologue to the future.
