Abstract

Executive OverviewWhat is wrong with Japanese companies? For a while now, Japanese management—which once held sway over the minds of businesspeople worldwide—seems to have lost its punch and has not found a way to reinvigorate itself. Watching this long stagnation, management scholars appear to have lost interest in Japanese companies. It is as if the ascendency of Japanese management ended with the publication of The Knowledge-Creating Company and there remains nothing to learn from observing Japanese business. This article seeks to rectify this casual indifference toward Japanese management and point out opportunities to gain insight into organizational decay through empirical analysis of Japanese organizations. This offers a valuable resource for researchers exploring the underlying mechanisms at play in deteriorated firms and for practitioners who intend to revamp their organizations.
