In recent years the term ‘social exclusion’ has been the focus of many debates and studies on social policy in Europe; yet the precise meaning of the term and therefore the extent of the problem have remained somewhat elusive. Clearly there is a need for precise definitions followed by analyses, measurements and comparisons among European countries. These goals are taken up in these two books. The first book, Social Exclusion and European Policy, brings together the views of several researchers from seven European countries, and from different fields of expertise (Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Law). Its purpose is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the issues that will contribute to the development of policy to combat social exclusion. A detailed introductory chapter by one of the editors is followed by thirteen contributions, organised in three parts. The first part is made of chapters that are distinctive in their effort to define and delimitate the concept of social exclusion. The second part broaches the ways six contrasting European countries (Netherlands, Denmark, UK, Ireland, Greece and France), have dealt with their social exclusion problem. This more practical part is useful in that it illustrates the conceptual issues raised in the first part, for instance the complex and multidimensional nature of social exclusion and the existence of national views of it. Finally the third part encompasses chapters that present and assess the EU‐wide facets of the policies currently undertaken to combat exclusion. These facets, which have focused heavily but not exclusively on unemployment, consist for instance of the structural funds, the European Employment Strategy, the National Action Plans, and the Open Method of Co‐ordination.
