Abstract

Abstract This special issue showcases papers by five authors who provide insights into the theoretical directions for work–family balance research. The special issue begins with an expert commentary by Westman, Brough, and Kalliath who discuss the often overlooked role of work–family crossover. Second, Powell reviews the culture‐sensitivity of work–family balance theories and advances a cultural framework for consideration. Third, van Steenbergen and Ellemers showcase a longitudinal research design which includes both objective and subjective health indicators. Van Steenbergen and Ellemers demonstrate that employees who experience low conflict and high facilitation between work and family roles are objectively healthier, less absent and better performing employees. Fourth, Taylor, DelCampo and Blancero progress current discussions concerning the impact of organisational climate on work–family balance, with a specific focus on organisational fairness. Finally, Ngo, Foley, and Loi report how family‐friendly work practices (FFWPs) of selected multi‐national corporations in Hong Kong directly influenced organisational performance.
