This series of articles has projected the future of logistics systems into the 21st century, especially the area of setting logistics objectives: What are the overall objectives of logistics systems going to be? How will they translate into the goals for an organization? How will they translate into the specific strategies? This article looks at one of the most crucial parts of that whole strategic logistics process--how to measure whether the organization is achieving its objectives through its strategies. Measurement and control of logistics performance entails four broad aspects: information systems to gather and report performance measures, what constitutes good performance measures, variance analysis, and corrective action. Each of these aspects is discussed in turn, with examples to clarify each.
