In this article, a transcription is presented of Barry Turner's seminar `The Rise of Organizational Symbolism' given at the London Business School (LBS) on 14 January 1987. The issues discussed include the origins of the Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism (SCOS), Turner's scepticism of the unitary organization culture concept and culture-driven change programmes, his concern with the lack of political sensitivity in culture-based studies, and his explanation of the upsurge in popularity of anthropological notions in organizational analysis. The article also describes events that preceded Turner's invitation to lead what was the first in a series of seminars on `New Perspectives on Organizations'. This account revolves around a brief history of the `Marginal's Club', a short-lived discussion group which hosted Turner's seminar.
