After a brief initial look, a lecturer in search for textbooks may hastily drop this one. Indeed, the second edition largely carries on the layout of the first edition, which was published in the year 1985 and reprinted 1993. However, to conclude that this new edition would be merely another reprint of a somewhat aged presentation of production economics, dating from a time when agricultural and general economics were perhaps less integrated than they are today, would be premature! The authors recommend their book for first-year graduate students and advanced undergraduates in economics, agricultural economics and management. Of course, there are a lot of existing textbooks on microeconomic theory that usually cover production economics as one of their fundamental chapters; in addition, some openly licensed online textbooks on economic theory have recently emerged and can be downloaded free of charge. Nevertheless, a lecturer conceptualising his own classroom presentations of production theory will soon realise that decades of combined teaching and research experience are shining through the didactic approach of The Economics of Production, making the book a worthwhile alternative to be considered especially for courses in agricultural and applied economics.
