On the incidence of transportation costs on India's exports
重新检验了Yeats关于印度在美国市场面临运输劣势的结论,发现仅三分之一劣势源于高运费,其余归因于出口产品结构及低单位价值。
Abstract This paper re‐examines the results obtained by Yeats in an of t‐quoted article which indicate that India suffers from a sizeable transport disadvantage vis‐à‐vis her competitors in the US market. Using detailed data, we show that, contrary to Yeats’ claim, only one‐third of this disadvantage is accounted for by higher transport charges faced by India's exports. The other two‐thirds can be attributed to the product composition of these exports. The fact that India tends to export products with relatively low unit values is also found to be a factor producing high transport costs.
