Abstract

The study of spatial phenomena is labeled by many terms. Three of them are regional science, regional economies, and urban economics. The progression tends to be from operational modeling to economic theorizing. Regional science is a multidisciplinary tool box used to address macro issues such as the determination of output and employment across regions. Regional economics focuses on the economics within a given region, while urban economics casts the analysis in a microeconomic framework with land-consuming households. However, the progression from regional science to urban economics could also be considered to be a progression from the most general to the most specific. In economics, agents have fixed locations; the only role of location is as a device to differentiate commodities. General equilibrium analysis can be used to explain the supply of and demand for commodities, differentiated by location, along with the resulting trade flows.
