Minding the Store: Are Entrepreneurial Retailers More Successful?

This article discusses why many retailers fail. In a 2006 Journal of Retailing article, David Griffith of Michigan State University, Stephanie Noble of the University of Mississippi, and Quimei Chen of the University of Hawaii look at whether entrepreneurial skills aid performance of small retail stores. The study showed that entrepreneurial retail managers were better able to develop knowledge resources related to regulatory agencies, suppliers, competitors and customers. An entrepreneurial orientation to management did not influence small retailers' ability to capitalize on competitor or customer knowledge resources.
