Equity and Equality in East and West
Combining insights from economics and social psychology, this paper presents indices of equity that can be used for the evaluation of alternative distributions of income. The validity of these indices is investigated using an international data set. It is found that judgments regarding income differences are more closely related to indices of equity than to perceptions of inequality. Furthermore, it is found that greater inequality is perceived and preferred in Western (capitalist) states than in Eastern (former communist) states and that the distribution in the West is considered to be more equitable than in the East.
