The article discusses the theory of the natural environment in stakeholder models. The definition of a stakeholder usually focuses on groups or individuals who can affect or are affected by the achievement of an organization's objectives. The three aspects of treating the natural environment as the stakeholder are conceptual, ethical, and market related. There is a push to develop ways of thinking about the environment that overcome the traditional environmental approach that has pervaded industrial societies. The goal is to provide alternatives to the split between humans and nature. A major impediment to treating the natural environment as a stakeholder is the way in which the environment is treated in standard economic theory.
