Basic Research and Productivity Increase in Manufacturing: Additional Evi¬dence

In a recent paper in this Review, Edwin\nMansfield illustrated empirically (using a\nsample of ten petroleum and six chemical\nfirms) that firm rates of productivity change\nare related to the amount of companyfinanced\nbasic research performed, certeris\nparibus. In this note additional evidence is\npresented which is supportive of Mansfield's\nfindings.
