How can researchers bridge the gap between compensation theory and the compensation pressures today's complex organizations face? The book “Compensation in Organizations: Current Research and Practice,” edited by Sara L. Rynes and Barry Gerhart, tackles this problem head-on. This book is squarely aimed at academic researchers, and Rynes and Gerhart know their audience. Each chapter begins with a brief “state-of-the-field” overview, addressing a defined segment of compensation research and theory. The chapter authors then identify compensation issues and practices that current knowledge does not address. In essence, in each chapter a research agenda for the applied researcher is laid out. The book does a great job of identifying the “holes” that have not been addressed by the compensation literature; there are enough research ideas here to occupy compensation researchers for decades to come.
