The article examines the success and failure of firms within the disk drive industry that has been characterized by significant technological change and innovation. Some firms which have achieved both technological superiority and financial success fail to adopt new technologies due to an over-reliance on customer-defined technologies. In order for firms that have been marked by technological change to succeed, they must pursue innovations that are not demanded by their current customers. The research indicated the relying to heavily on customer-oriented strategies can prohibit innovation and success. Customers are usually concerned with incremental changes which can stifle disruptive innovation strategies.
