This article discusses factors which influence internet usage in various countries. In a 2005 article in “Social Forces,” Mauro Guillén of the University of Pennsylvania and Sandra Suárez of Temple University, explore the extent to which a country's degree of development and status in the world impact Internet usage. They also examined how level of democracy, cosmopolitanism, the extent of competition in the delivery of local telephone service and the ownership of Internet providers in a country, impacts Internet usage.
