With a yield function that gave a maximum attainable yield, and the yield performance of the farmers in relation to this, and with multiple classification analysis of the differences between the maximum and actual yields, it was found that the level of formal education of farmers was not a significant factor, but that farmers’ non‐formal education (understanding of the technology), which was independent of formal education, was a significant influence.
