Abstract

The expansion of federal regulation and tort liability have greatly increased the impact of legal institutions in the contemporary business environment. Prevailing models of corporate social responsibility cling to a one-dimensional view of the law and thus fail to describe accurately this altered relationship. The demarketing of Rely brand tampons in the wake of the toxic shock crisis in 1980 illustrates the complex interaction between law and corporate social responses.
