To Be Modular or Not to Be? Some Answers to the Question

The article discusses modular forms of organization in dealing with challenges such as keeping pace with technological innovations and coping with global competition. Modular organizations can quickly be restructured as needed, unlike the stable parameters of traditional organizations. The author looks at the research of Melissa A. Schilling of New York University and H. Kevin Steensma of the University of Washington on the use of three modular forms. Schilling and Steensma used data from 330 U.S. manufacturing industries over a five-year time span. Although the study captured the entire manufacturing sector within the U.S., only objective information made readily available by the government and private data managers was able to be used. The use of contract manufacturing in outsourcing is also discussed.
