Abstract

When explicit account is taken of the fact that consumer surplus measures are typically used in a many-consum er setting, two issues arise. Namely, what is the information require d to utilize the measure, and what are the normative principles entai led by their use? This paper develops measures which are applicable w hen individual preferences come from either of two classes. Their inf ormational requirements are analyzed and the social orderings which t hey induce on consumption allocations are characterized. A means of e xtending these results into wider individual preference classes is th en developed.
