Abstract

This book makes a very nice contribution towards better understanding of how producers in developing countries are affected by changes in export supply chains. An innovative perspective is put forward on supply chain analysis with a focus on competition among exporters in the chains. The book includes a rigorous theoretical and simulation-based analysis of price, income and poverty effects of policy shocks, and changes in institutional arrangements and market power along the supply chains. On the basis of simulation analyses for several cases of specific export chains, the authors can quantify these effects, which results in interesting and innovative insights. The book is a must for academics, researchers and policy-makers concerned with the development and governance of export supply chains in poor countries and its implications for rural development, income mobility and poverty reduction. The analyses in the book are based on a careful selection of specific case studies of traditional tropical export chains that is described in chapter 2, and on a detailed description of the institutional characteristics of these chains in chapter 3. Based on the importance of the export sectors and the availability of data, 12 case studies are selected. These include coffee, cocoa, cotton and tobacco chains in six different African countries. The structure, organisation and vertical relations in these selected export chains are described in detail, with a graphical depiction of stylised value chains for each crop.
