Abstract

This article discusses research that examined the concept of social loafing. The author defines social loafing as a situation in which a person is placed in a group and removed from individual accountability. The study was conducted by P. Christopher Earley of the University of California at Irvine. The author discusses some of Earley's findings which suggests that managers from different societies that are considered more collectivistic than Americans do not necessarily work better in groups than Americans, who are largely considered to be individualistic. The managers from collectivistic societies did; however, perform more poorly were assigned tasks to complete on their own. The study was addressed some of the implications of incentive systems for decreasing social loafing.
