Abstract. This is a study of macroeconomics in action: how an applied macroeconomist works in a policy context to provide analysis and guidance on specific issues of public concern. We examine and classify Arthur Okun's policy essays, and thereby try to gain a better understanding of the role of economists in the policy‐making process.
