Stimulating Social Entrepreneurship: Can Support From Cities Make a Difference?

The article considers social entrepreneurship, the initiation of public-spirited ventures designed to address such community social problems as illiteracy, substance abuse, and environmental degradation. The author cites research by Ronnie L. Korosec of the University of Central Florida and Evan M. Berman of Louisiana State University on how governmental support affects such efforts in U.S. cities. The reserachers found that city support made a difference in both the quantity and quality of social entrepreneurs' activities, and that supportive city governments were more likely to improve settings for business.
