Abstract

This article presents commentary regarding Joep Cornelissen's 2005 criticism of Cliff Oswick's comparison models of metaphor and proposed “domains interaction” model. The author believes that Cornelissen overemphasizes the generalizability of his approach while dismissing alternative explanations. His model lacks the universal applicability Cornelissen claims it to have, making it unfit for use within organization theory. Cornellissen's conceptualization draws on work in cognitive science, suggesting that the application of metaphor within organizational theorizing involves the conjunction of whole semantic domains in which a correspondence between terms and concepts is constructed. The author mentions Cornelissen' criticism of comparison theorists for their focus on similarity.
