Evidence on the Determinants and Factor Content Characteristics of Japanese Technology Trade 1977-1981

This paper examines the determinants and factor content characteristics of trade in technologies for Japan under the assumption that technologies are produced through the application of R$50D factor inputs. Japan is revealed to be a net exporter of R$50D labor and a net importer of skilled labor used in R$50D. Interestingly, government subsidies for technologies appear to target less-advanced industries in Japan. Results are broadly comparable with the factor content characteristics of Japanese commodity trade, with technology trade patterns on a regional basis showing a distinct dual structure.
