Abstract

KARL BRUNNER s CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF MONETARY ECONOMICS during the last thirty years was of the first order of importance. I am confident that this will be the verdict of future historians of the period's economic thought. They will base it not just on his enviable record of solo publication and citation, but on his quite extraordinary contnbutions as a collaborator (often but by no means always as a coauthor), an organizer of conferences and, above all, as an editor. 1 It is quite impossible to conceive of how the discipline might have evolved without the two journals that Karl founded the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking and the Journal of Monetary Economics or of what course policy debates might have taken, not only in the United States but also in western Europe, without the Carnegie-Rochester, Konstanz, and Interlaken meetings, not to mention the Shadow Open Market Committee as well as numerous ad hoc conferences in which he was involved. And anyone who contributed to his journals or participated
