Abstract

This article discusses why managers seek self-directed employees with a high degree of openness to experience, which they claim brings added value to the firm. Previous research has suggested that openness to experience hasn't necessarily ensured good job performance by employees. The author ponders whether the relationship between openness and job performance is elusive, or even non-existent. Studies focusing on employees from the public and private sector and their response to resource availability and leadership styles were analyzed. Research suggests that when resources are limited, employees will demonstrate less of a commitment to the organization.
