The article reports on a study by a team of researchers from four universities concerning procedural justice in layoff systems during organizational downsizing. The researchers—Joel Brockner, Mary Konovsky, Rochelle Cooper-Schneider, Robert Folger, Christopher Martin and Robert Bies—found that negative effects from layoff can be avoided if employees believe they were treated fairly, given sufficient notice, and receive appropriate severance pay. Disgruntled employees can be a source of negative publicity for the organization.
