The worsening financial state of the multinational tractor industry

The tractor industry of the Western countries includes some large multinational firms (e.g. Fiat, Ford, John Deere, International Harvester, Kubota, Massey Ferguson). These firms are faced with declining sales and some of them are even threatened by bankruptcy. This article investigates several indicators of the multinational firms mentioned above and tries to explain causes leading to the actual situation. The main reasons identified and analysed are: (a) the income situation in the farm sector; (b) the little understood forces of the structural change in the world's tractor production and trade in the Seventies; (c) some unexpected consequences of the transfer of tractor production to developing countries and (d) the increasing demand for single-axle tractors.
