Agricultural research in transforming Central and Eastern Europe

The agricultural research system in Central and Eastern Europe (including the former Soviet Union) is in the process of transition along with the economic and political structures of those countries. These political and economic changes require a significant adjustment in the region's agricultural research systems. This coincides with a period in which the global research system itself is undergoing change and adjustment. The overall experiences of developed countries and the general principles of a modern agricultural research system have to be applied according to the differing conditions in the respective countries. Despite some progress in implementing reforms in agricultural research, in general, with the exception of some of the Central European countries, the transition of the agricultural research system is still being delayed and lags behind reforms in the agricultural sector.
