Abstract

The scope of this 445-page book is much broader than the title would suggest, and the topics are discussed in greater depth than the designation Kurzlehrbuch might indicate. This is the book's third edition, published a decade after the second edition. As Koester points out, both EU agricultural policy and the social science underlying market and policy analysis have evolved over this decade. These two changes provide the primary rationale for the third edition, with recent changes in policy arguably being more profound than those in economic theory. The book is divided into two parts. The first, consisting of chapters 2–4, presents standard, intermediate-level microeconomic concepts primarily using a graphic approach. These three chapters cover demand for agricultural products, supply of agricultural products and price formation, respectively. Expanding on the previous editions, greater emphasis is placed on the special characteristics of agricultural as compared to non-agricultural products. The discussion on page 22 of goods consumed based on experience (Erfahrungsgüter) and trust or confidence (Vertrauensgüter) is especially timely. Both of these warrant more analysis in the future. ‘Experience goods’ have to be consumed before the consumer can truly evaluate them, because of the transaction cost involved in the discovery of product quality–such as whether the cook at a restaurant prepared the fish with fresh or used oil.
