This paper demonstrates the usefulness of network analysis for studying the impact of alternative investments. Careful sequential analysis can identify the benefits of alternative investments on an entire system and suggest where to conduct detailed engineering and economic studies. The approach is demonstrated by studying the saturated grain transportation and storage facilities in Paraná, Brazil. Capacitated network analysis is used to identify a hierarchy of bottlenecks in the system and to simulate alternative improvements.
