Police Professionalism and Role Conflict: A Comparison of Rural and Urban Departments

This study examines the impact offive dimensions of police professionalism on role conflict. Estimates from stepwise multiple regressions demonstrate that the various professionalism dimensions differentially affect role conflict. The results further indicate that role conflict may be reduced through the professionalization of the police, but the influence of professionalism is conditioned by department size.
