Managing excess inventories: A life-cycle approach

Executive Summary Managers at all levels would like to “stamp out” excess inventories once and for all, and then prevent them from emerging in the future. This article describes some of the issues concerning excess inventories, examines why excess inventories cannot be prevented completely, and proposes that a continuing management system is necessary to control and reduce the adverse effects of excess inventory. It proposes that a life-cycle approach, coupled with improvements in the supply chain, can provide a path to reducing the adverse effects of excess inventories. The article describes each phase of the life-cycle model and offers ideas for implementation of the model.
