Variations in terms of exchange and their impact on farm households in Bangladesh

The purpose of this paper is to estimate ‘terms of exchange’ for different farm household groups in Bangladesh. The phrase ‘terms of exchange’ rather than the usual ‘terms of trade’ is used here to underline certain important conceptual and methodological distinctions. The former expression is used in a disaggregative sense to make the concept broader and to make it amenable to drawing implications for income distribution. The exercise reveals that, in the face of an improvement in the overall terms of exchange, those for specific farm household groups show differential movements. The paper concludes by drawing some of the implications of the results.
